Democracy For America

"13TH": Host a Movie Night on May 18!

Mass incarceration is a billion-dollar industry in the U.S. Few of us realize how much of the US population is, has, or will be incarcerated during their lifetime AND the issues that follow them even after incarceration.

Corporations are profiting from dividing families, terrorizing communities, and incarcerating hundreds of thousands of innocent people. And this is not new.

"13TH" is a documentary by Ava DuVernay that illustrates the impact that this incredible greed has on America. the Thirteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution freed the slaves and prohibited slavery (unless as punishment for a crime). In this film, DuVernay shows how corporate greed has made millions off the backs of inmates since the Civil War, and how it continues through the privatization of prisons.

As Trump seeks to undo President Obama's legacy, we must keep educating ourselves and our communities, and listening to the voices of those most impacted by an administration with no reservations about putting profit ahead of our lives.
