Immigration detention is a billion-dollar industry in the U.S. Few of us realize that a Congressionally-mandated quota requires the U.S. to keep 34,040 detention beds occupied, 62% of which are in private prisons.
Corporations are profiting from dividing families, terrorizing communities, and incarcerating hundreds of thousands of innocent people. And this is not new. Our detention budget for FY 2016 was $2.3 billion.
"Immigrants for Sale" is a short documentary by Brave New Films, that illustrates the impact that this incredible greed has on America. We'll be watching "Immigrants for Sale" alongside "Pursuing the Dream: A DACAmentary," a short documentary produced by Solidarity Strategies. In this film, DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) recipients discuss the impact that the program has on their lives and their fears of a future with Trump in the White House.
As Trump seeks to undo President Obama's legacy, we must keep educating ourselves and our communities, and listening to the voices of those most impacted by an administration with no reservations about putting profit ahead of our lives.
