Most American workers in the private sector of the economy don't get paid when they or a close relative become sick. They can't stay home with a sick child, or spend time with a dying parent. We're the only developed nation in the world that doesn't require employers to pay sick leave.
Businesses often claim they can't afford to offer paid sick leave, even though big corporations routinely offer it to their salaried employees. Yet most new jobs in America are low-wage and hourly, and don't come with this guarantee. Seventy-eight percent of low-wage workers don't get it. Most of those workers are women.
President Obama can lead on this -- and he doesn't need Congressional approval.
