President Biden has nominated Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez to run U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency (ICE). Sheriff Gonzalez is an experienced law enforcement official who sharply criticized Donald Trump’s racist immigration policies. When elected Harris County Sherriff in 2016, Gonzalez immediately canceled a federal partnership that authorized sheriff’s deputies to enforce immigration laws, ending an agreement that had been in place since 2008.
ICE was created in the aftermath of 9/11, along with the rush for the Patriot Act and the approval of torture by the Bush administration and advocates who have called to abolish ICE, like Rep. Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez, have often stated reform was impossible “because the agency lacks adequate oversight.”
Now, once the Senate confirms Gonzalez, the agency may finally get the oversight it needs to do the job right, protecting civil rights and following the rule of law.
Time is short. The window for proving it’s possible to reform will close quickly. Director Gonzalez will have to move quickly and take action immediately. That’s why we’re calling on Director Gonzalez and the Biden administration to work together to clean it up or shut it down now!
